DUCATI has released power graphs for the new 'Superquadro' engine that will power the 1199 Panigale, and with 195bhp it's in Desmosedici RR territory.
Actually, factor in the stomping 98lbft of torque and it's likely to put the firm's £40k MotoGP replica firmly in the shade when it comes to performance.
In typical modern Ducati style, the new engine is going to be an electronic tech fest, with multiple riding modes, but it ditches a lot of Ducati's traditional engineering. Sure, Desmo valvegear stays, but the old belt-drive cams are gone, replaced by a combined chain-and-gear-drive set-up. The rattly dry clutch is binned in favour of a oil-bathed wet slipper (ooh er, missus). And the bore and stroke are truly radical, with a massive 112mm bore and tiny 60.8mm stroke letting the 1199cc twin rev like mad – the peak power is at 10,750rpm with peak torque up at 9000rpm. It's no low-rev slugger.
A tougher (and totally new) gearbox transmits all that power, and there's endless exotic material – magnesium covers, titanium valves; we're guessing it's not cheap to make. Surprisingly, though, given the motor's extreme state of tune, its service intervals have actually been extended – 15,000 miles between major services actually sounds pretty practical, and that's not a word we'd normally associate with a top-of-the-range Ducati superbike.
